Foursquare Adds Four UK cities
App for urban explorers adds fifty cities globally
The city exploring app Foursquare has added fifty cities to its database, including five in the UK. Described with a whiff of hyperbole by CNN as “next year’s Twitter”, Foursquare awards players badges for exploring certain locations within a given city. Earn more badges than anyone else and you’ll be named as a Foursquare mayor; early adopters of the game say that it’s as addictive as anything, as well as being a cool way to find places that you might never have considered visiting before.
In some US cities, badges can also be exchanged at cafes and hotels for freebies, although in the current economic climate it’s kind of hard to imagine many British retailers signing up for this in the near future.
The five UK cities that have been added are Brighton, Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh. Which sucks for me as a Glasgow resident…hopefully Foursquare’s global ambitions mean that more British towns will be added in the near future.
Foursquare can be downloaded as an iPhone or Android app, or accessed via a mobile-optimised website. For more details, check the main site here.

If you’re in to this sort of location-aware game, I highly recommend Gowalla (www.gowalla.com). It has a far more polished app and has the benefit of being able to be played anywhere with a decent mobile signal and GPS signal. There are plenty of spots in Edinburgh and Glasgow already and you can easily add your own for added kudos/stamps/items etc.
