Great post Nick! That's the truest glimpse of the future.

As much as I agree that this will be a great new innovation, it won't be the death of the console particularly; it might change the shape, but many (if not most) of us like to own the physical (or backup) copy of the game, don't we?

To me, there's nothing more infuriating that going to play a game you've been playing for some time to find that they've shut the server, and you're buggered (this happened to me with Everquest Online Adventures).

This reads to me about the same as whoever it was who first predcited the "death of the LP/vinyl".

Let's just hope that WHEN it takes off, Square have come back down to earth on their price points on downloadable content.

While digitally distributed cloud-based "games on demand" will happen (probably in the next 10 years). If business teaches us anything, it won't be the early adopters like gaikai or onlive to usher in this new era, instead they will pave the way and die by the wayside (sadly) to have some unnamed company champion this. This happens time and again in business (google, facebook, wow). But hey at least they can say they started the revolution at parties!
