Mystery Pubs Host 3D Soccer
Aside from touchscreen tablets and e-book readers (see, I haven’t mentioned the dreaded A word!) the other major story at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show was 3D TV.
Having seen Avatar twice in the past ten days, I’m beginning to enjoy the prospect of 3D viewing at home, with or without the silly spectacles.
Sadly, impoverished writers and other mere mortals are often unable to afford a 40 inch flat screen extravaganza at the drop of a hat, so unless the technology becomes radically more affordable it will be some time before we all have 3D enabled tellys in our sitting rooms.
Luckily, pubs are coming to the rescue, with help from BSkyB and Korean manufacturers LG. BSkyB has fitted out nine pubs around the UK and Ireland with brand new 3D television; a new 47 inch LD920.
The match between Manchester United and Arsenal will be filmed and broadcasted live in 3D and beamed to each of these pubs on Sunday at 4pm. Four drinking venues in London, two in Manchester and one each in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Dublin have been kitted out with the new TVs, but BSkyB has not disclosed their names for fear of overcrowding.
Sky 3D will be rolling out to hundreds of pubs across the UK and Ireland from April onwards. As always, punters will have to don the appropriate eyewear to appreciate the 3D effect.
UPDATE: A very friendly man by the name of Jungle Jim has posted a list of the pubs in question in our comments section, so with deferential bows of thanks in his direction I reproduce them here:
Cardiff – The Blackweir Tavern (North Road)
Dublin – Qbar (D’Olier Street)
Edinburgh – Belushis (Market Street)
London – Bar Kick (Shoreditch)
London – The Elk Bar (Fulham)
London – The George (Liverpool St)
London – Sirocco ( Soho)
Manchester – Binary Bar (Castlefield)
Manchester – O’Sheas (Princess Street)

Come on…..must be able to find out which pubs are showing it!!! not cool….!
