Virtual Property Sold for £200,000

For a virtual space station

The most expensive piece of digital property has been sold for £200,000 on Planet Calypso – a space station.

Online gamer, Erik Novak splashed out on the building at an auction and believes he’ll be able to recoup his investment by letting users use the facilities, before selling at a profit.

The makers of the game believe he could do this within two years.

Buzz Erik Lightyear, to use Erik’s character name hails from Canada and is one of 800,000 users of the game which launched in 2003.

“This is a stunning investment opportunity. Planet Calypso is one of the few safe investments in this economy,” said Mr Novak.

“I have even found the love of my life in the game, and now we live together in real life.”

Computer games writer Andrew Thomas stated on tgdaily.com that the Canadian had ‘proved you can put a price tag on stupidity’.

Regarding Andrew Thomas’s comments: Is this any more stupid than paying millions for the work of a famous artist? Are the people who buy these things stupid as well? It’s just paint and canvas after all. Or perhaps, is he just ignorant to the true benefit to humanity provided by a virtual space station?

Personally, I’m both a sceptic and philistine, so I say they’re all tossers.

@Roger I think I’ll have to agree with you there. As I saw the story, I thought that buying a £200,000 virtual property is just crazy, and it is.

But if lots of people use the game, and will pay good money to be entertained playing it, then that’s up to them – as long as they enjoy themselves, we only have one life. Also, as he says, there are many others who play the game that’ll pay to use the building (I dunno what for but there you go!)

I think its weird, but who am I to say its weird when I’m not getting a piece of the virtual action :D

I love this king of stuff. It’s crazy, but I don’t believe it will be forever.

People will use it, i’m sure.
