OSCARS Special
AVATAR snubbed by OSCARs
James Cameron, former king of the world, was perhaps unfairly snubbed by the Academy last week.
Avatar – the best selling motion picture of all time – did come away with much deserved technical awards.
Critics have been quick to point out that James Cameron remains isolated from mainstream Hollywood and his maverick style have them less-than-impressed and not for the first time. The man spent a decade perfecting underwater filming, 3D cameras and CGI to bring his vision to the screen.
Some have pointed at the anti-flag message of Avatar compared to winner The Hurt Locker – that an underlying anti-war vs. a pro US message has fallen foul of the political climate.
However Avatar‘s true significance will be judged years from now if it is deemed a sci classic (a la Aliens) or sci-fi damp squib (WaterWorld).
The Glitz was back back back
Yes, yes, yes. It was all stations bling-go at this years OSCARs and after several years of forced, guilt-ridden nominees dressing down in light of the bad economic markets, unpopular wars, and natural disasters, the OSCARs organisers asked all attendees to bring the glitz back to the year’s most anticipated awards show.
From stunning gold to pristine white, the likes of Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep lived up to expectations.
OSCARs Viewing Figures Soar
After a decade of steady decline in ratings, this year the OSCARs reported its first significant increase for nearly a decade: just over a whopping three billion.
Drastic changes like 10 nominess for best picture, online transmission and a shorter length of show were tactics used to reel in the younger casual viewer.
For now OSCARs organisers may be happy, but with a vast generation gap between viewers and nominees, she may find herself ”dumbing down’ a tad more for the iPod generation, and the first problem to be solved may be the four hour format.
The British Should have Stayed at Home
Yes once again our hopes were dashed as Mr Darcy (AKA Colin Firth ) lost out to the Big Lebowski himself Jeff Bridges for Best Actor.
British talent fared worse this year than it has for more than ten years.
For over a decade, British actresses, directors and producers have dominated the OSCAR scene. We’ll be back!
