Brand Insight: Switching on with BT

BT advertorial June 2010

If we can access it, there’s a whole world of amazing internet content out there and it can be ours at the touch of a button. Yet to get that content, we have to have the right kit. We also have to have the right environment and, thankfully, in most of the UK there is fast broadband access – a must for easy downloading.

Internet

The first thing you need to get online is a computer, although mobile devices such as the iPad or mobile phone will also give you access to the internet. Almost any computer you buy new nowadays will have the ability to connect to the internet, and if you’re going for a laptop, the vast majority will offer wireless internet access. If your budget is tight, you could opt fora netbook – these mini laptops have smaller screens and fewer features but are perfectly good for surfing online.

Then you’ll need an internet connection. Broadband is the norm nowadays, offering fast connection speeds and virtually unlimited access. You can find out what sort of speed you can get with a broadband speed checker. The provider you choose will usually provide you with a broadband box, which you can connect to your computer with a cable or, if you have the right equipment, you can log on wirelessly.

If you plan on taking your computer outside your home, you need to check that your computer does have wireless, or wifi, access. This way, you can connect at one of the many wifi spots that are found in cafes, bars and other public places. The alternative is to get a 3G dongle, which works in the same way as a mobile phone – essentially you’ll be able to get online wherever you can get a signal on your phone.

Television on demand

We’re no longer at the mercy of the schedulers when it comes to programmes we want to watch – many content providers now offer a huge range of television on demand, which means we can choose what and when we want to watch.

The first thing you need is, of course, a television. Almost any set will do, and as most of us already have one there’s no need to splash out. But if you’re thinking of replacing your existing TV, it’s worth considering one with high definition with its improved picture and sound quality. HD televisions also have the right connection sockets for any other equipment you may use.

You’ll also need a set-top box. These connect to both your digital TV and your broadband or phone line, and it’s through this that your content will be provided. As with broadband, most television on-demand providers will be able to sort out the box when you sign up to their services. Some boxes also come with the ability to record scheduled programming as well.

Broadband

All BT Total Broadband options give you reliable broadband and a BT Home Hub as standard that has an unbeatable wireless connection compared to other UK broadband providers. Up to 20Mb broadband available now in selected areas.

BT is playing catch up Virgin Media had speeds like this and fibre optics quite sometime before and even offer faster speeds than 20Mb such as 50Mb now. Plus it looks like they are beta testing 200Mb broadband so VM is much better broadband wise and television wise as yet again Virgin Media had on demand television years ago ahead of competition (unless Sky is a must). Oh and to top it off their pricing is much better and offers more value and a lower price.

I agree with the above poster, this article sounds like it was paid-for-by-BT
The home hub is very cheap hardware and really doesnt provide an “unbeatable wireless connection”. I really doubt anyone would get 20Mbit speeds on BT, Whereas if you’re in a Virgin cable area speeds of 20Mbit and 50Mbit are promised and delivered! I live 2-3 miles from an exchange and have a steady 20mbit download speed!

If you cant get virgin cable, Be there and O2 are good providers, fast.co.uk are the UK’s best.

Virgin box is better than sky too, Record two AND watch/record another! Beats record one and watch one.
Plus full iplayer, some itv and 4OD shows the virgin boxes have MUCH better on-demand content. As well as loads of FREE & add-free (For XL) on-demand music videos!
