Gadget for the Girls: Ohmibod

Vibrator plugs into your iPod, iPhone, MP3 or any music player

We all have them in a cupboard somewhere; on top of the kitchen units; stuffed in a drawer; or in a box under the bed. Unwanted gifts!

You know what I mean; that cardigan your Auntie Iris bought you for your birthday last year. The huge pants your Granny gave you for Christmas. The bath salts that smell so potent you wouldn’t even consider putting them anywhere near your bath.

The T-Shirts that are either two sizes too small; or of course, two sizes too big. Gloves, scarves, socks, gloves and more gloves – yes we all have a collection of unwanted, let’s face it inappropriate ‘what the f*** were they thinking’ gifts.

I keep mine. I mean there might be an opportunity somewhere down the line when I could give them away to someone else as birthday gift (yes, I really would do that and don’t pretend that you wouldn’t).

Obviously you can’t give it back to the person who gave it to you that would be stupid! But you could use it for a Secret Santa present for example; or a leaving gift for someone you’ll never see again.

You get the idea.

I’ll get to the point; last week I was faced with an impromptu leaving night for an old friend (I use the term friend lightly, more like a friend of a friend) who was heading off with her backpack for a few years.

I was certain I had an hand held battery operated fan that I had gained somewhere over the years that would be a perfect leaving gift so I started rooting through my box of unwanted gifts when lo and behold I came across the Ohmibod.

Now just to be clear I didn’t purchase this myself it was a collective birthday gift from the girls, which they thought was hilarious and to be fair after nine or so margaritas it certainly was very funny.

So with half an hour to kill I thought I should at least give it a go…

Now for those of you that haven’t come across one of these before the Ohmibod certainly takes plug in and play to a whole new level.

This vibrator plugs into your iPod, iPhone, MP3 or any music player and vibrates to the rhythm of the music. I’d say it’s about five and a half inches long and an inch or so in diameter.  It comes complete with a nice little velvet pouch (although you should note that the pouch will not disguise the product inside) and you also get a universal headphone connector.

It’s simple to operate. Plug it into your iPod, turn the tunes on and it provides strong yet quiet, intense rhythmic vibrations. To be honest there is something a little strange about seeing your vibrator pulsate in time to Justin Timberlake and I’ll own up I’m not geeky enough to know exactly how it works … but work it does!!!

Here’s my issue.
I’m more of an easy listening music kind or a girl. I’m not embarrassed to tell you my iPod contains a variety of slow tracks and chill out music; Tracey Chapman, Snow Patrol, KT Turnstall and it would seem those tracks give off fairly paltry vibrations. So to tell you the truth I had to leave the job unfinished (well that’s not exactly true – a Rampant Rabbit will always work!).

In short if I wanted the Ohmibod to work for me I would need to crank my iPod full of non-stop dance and drum n bass tracks, then turn it up to full volume (seems the louder the more responsive) and I’m sure that would get it moving!

As far as girly gadgets go this one is pretty good. It’s a great novelty gift; good fun and definitely something to have a giggle over. But it you’re asking me if I would trade in the Rampant Rabbit for this little iPod accessory – then I would definitely have to say no.

Now ….. I guess as I’ve tried it out it I probably shouldn’t put it back in the unwanted gifts box. So for the time being it’s been promoted to my bedside cabinet and when the Rabbit runs low on battery power again I’m sure the Ohmibod will make a second appearance.

Nice!

Use it and then give it to your friend for a present? Should have sold it on eBay and could have made a fortune to spend on a bigger present for her. :)

You actually need a rabbit? No way, there’s no justice in the world :)

Can you imagine the product development meeting? ‘…But the market is flooded with ipod speakers, why don’t we make a vibrator attachment instead?’

I’m not sure whether it’s genius or disturbing. All I know is I need one. Not for me, you understand, for a gift. Honest…

I still think this thing has got a long way to go to beat the Rez Trance vibrator. I think my other half rather enjoyed me chunking through that game several times in a row while she…er…(the rest of this post has been moderated on the grounds of questionable taste / moral hygiene)
