Activision’s Bobby Kotick Hates You

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has been on fire this week. At the Deutsche Bank Securities Technology Conference in San Francisco he made a number of comments that seem to have been calculated to explode the heads of gamers, developers, and anyone who cares a jot about the industry. In a wide-ranging speech, Kotick – who earned $14m last year – dropped a number of bombs about Activision’s future plans, none of which were designed to make anyone happy apart from Activision shareholders.

Essentially, Kotick is in thrall to the almighty dollar to the expense of all else. Thus: “In the last cycle of videogames you spent $50 on a game, played it and took it back to the shop for credit. Today, we’ll (charge) $100 for a guitar. You might add a microphone or drums; you might buy two or three expansions packs, different types of music. Over the life of your ownership you’ll probably buy around 25 additional song packs in digital downloads. So, what used to be a $50 sale is a $500 sale today.”

This echoes a statement Kotick made last year when he explained the company’s lack of support for some new games, specifically ones that don’t lend themselves to sequels. Activision, Kotick said, has no interest in games that “don’t have the potential to be exploited every year on every platform with clear sequel potential and have the potential to become $100 million franchises.”

Talking of $100m franchises, Kotick likes the way that World of Warcraft is heading. “The best of all margins – the 25 per cent operating margin business – has the potential as we can see with World of Warcraft to be a 50 per cent operating margin business. What used to be a low 20s return on invested capital business is now growing to a plus 40 per cent return on invested capital business.”

And he’s not just setting his sights on Guitar Hero and WoW fans. Talking about upcoming and expensive Activision titles such as Modern Warfare 2, Kotick said: “if it was left to me, I would raise the prices even further.”

Having fired these encouraging salvos at the gaming community, Kotick then switched his targets to console manufacturers, who he seems intent on putting out of business by “untethering” Activision games from other-party hardware. “I think what the untethered Guitar Hero does is equal the playing field a little more and give you some leverage with first parties when it comes to downloadable content and the business model.”

Maybe the choice quotes of the event, though, came when Kotick talked about Activision’s developers; you know, the guys who actually make the stuff he gets so rich from. You’d think he’d have a bit of respect for them, right? Oh no, Kotick’s goal over the past 10 years has been – you couldn’t make this up – “to take all the fun out of making video games.” How? By instilling a culture of “scepticism, pessimism, and fear” amongst the company’s staff based around the economic depression and an incentive program that rewards “profit and nothing else”.

We’re having a hard time coming to terms with all this. While we tend to expect mega rich corporate bosses to be at least a bit evil, this flagrant display of gamer hate has left us dumbfounded. Activision is a mammoth company, with some of the biggest-selling franchises in the world under its umbrella, but at the end of the day its profits come from the pockets of gamers who don’t want to miss out on some great titles. If any other CEO exhibited as much contempt for his or her customers as Kotick has, their company would surely expect to face negative feedback or even a consumer boycott. But you just know that nothing like that will happen here. Apart from running the negligible risk of a few blogs printing pictures of him with devil horns or a Hitler moustache, Kotick knows that he’s invulnerable. The gaming “community” just doesn’t have the will or the organisation to, say, boycott Modern Warfare 2, and that – even more than Kotick’s comments – makes us truly sad.

i’ve told 400 relatives and friends not to buy it and got pledges from 421 out of 425. so you tell me what is going to happen to affinity ward and activision? Ill tell you, they will fail and i might spend a portion of my life to watching them fail and contribute to it as well.

Hey all, you know the controversial video that IW and Activision wanted to get rid of? Well, we have uploaded it and placed on our outside video channel and placed it on our website. The video is of the terrorist hitting an airport full of civilians.

Check out the video

I was thinking about buying Guiter Hero, now I’ll never EVER do it!
I rage, I lose. ;)

no, seriously

Hey, look. Market research shows consumers are stupid.
Big fucking deal.

Just because that guy acknowleges that they’ve been ripping you off, you start to “rage” and make pledges? Come on.

Psy

I’d happily boycott Modern Warfare 2. Why? Because the game SUCKS.

Unfortunately, many of my fellow gamers are retarded and would rather drool over “new” Guitar Hero or Call of Duty games where, in actuality, they nothing more than cheap copies of the former games in the franchise.

Outpostgamez

You all know about that video that was taken down over the killing of people in an airport? Check out the video!

You know this new business model has been a long time coming as far as I’m concerned. Video games have become big business and companies are bound to implement a new method to charge us more for the games that we play. However, the fact remains that MW2, WoW, and Guitar Hero are good games – whatever the cost. PC users especially have just been asking for developers and publishers to take this kind of approach. Why wouldn’t they make the game online only and pay to play when if they don’t do that 200k + people are gonna pirate the game and never buy it. Like it or not, the companies that sell games are there to make MONEY, and developers like IW and Blizzard entrust publishers like Activision to do just that, make profits. Boycotting a game will only benefit you in one way – not playing a potentially good and entertaining game.

Psy

@Sean: Piracy never started because people wanted to be rebellious; it started because people could not afford to pay for the entertainment they wanted. Whether that be music, movie or even video games.

Not all companies are “there to make MONEY” as you so desperately want to believe. There ARE companies out there who actually give a damn about the lowest common denominator: the people who AREN’T rich, who CAN’T pay $60 US (or $150 NZD) for entertainment. Hell, for once it’s actually CHEAPER to buy music or a movie but people want INTERACTIVE MEDIA.

People pirate games, music and movies because they can’t afford to buy them. And, it has actually been proven, that people who participate in piracy actually pay more in the product they pirate (music, games, etc) than those who don’t.

Think of it as a “try before you buy”. Having seen many piracy communities and seen how people act, I can actually say that many people who pirate only do so due to costs. And, if they end up liking the movie, or the game, or the album, they usually end up buying it. Because they now know they LIKE IT (which is why I wish more game demos were available).

anon

you assholes could start by not gobbling up every fucking fake music game/accessory/addon-pack that activision releases. what’s next? orchestra hero? “Gather ’round 36 of your closest friends to play plastic toys designed to look like a symphonic arrangement.”

alas. the point is wasted.

anon

This guy is just an idiot, sucks for him, me and all my friend and all their friends are done buying stuff from his company =D

Psy

@Anon: Who says many of us do? I’ve never bought a Call of Duty game after the first, and never plan on doing so. Call of Duty 4 I am told was good, Modern Warfare can suck my balls.

As for Guitar Hero or Rock Band? Decent gameplay, good concept, obviously executed for money. I wouldn’t buy any of the Guitar Hero games, namely because there is a free alternative for PC (Frets on Fire) which has a lot of people who makes custom songs for it. Boom, Guitar Hero rip-off that’s better than the actual game itself.

Not everyone is who you claim. So go on then, pull some more shit out of your ass.

ghost34

rock band and guitar hero are both decent games (as Psy stated) but they ARE sold, DLCs are released non stop and people keep buying them because they are too ingnorant i know what they are really buying, this is why games like FoF and Audiosurf are so popular among PC gamer. Because updates are FREE, the music is free as long as its in your PC..

Mark

If they make good games that are worth the money they ask then i will buy them.

Anthony

Now,. we must distribute the speech as far as we can.
Make a group on a website. Ex: Facebook, etc
Give its name “Anti Activision”
We must make this not to happen.
We need to convince all of the Activision’s gamer into our side.
To make a better future of FPS gaming, we must use our skills.

Anthony

The odd is on our side.
Bobby Kotick pissed off developers, gamers and HE still doesn’t realise the hackers.
Let’s unite.

Outpostgamez

Booby Kotick, is a MORON that is in his own little world i like to call fantasyland.

Check this out, Activision is pondering the possibility of an MMO on the COD series. http://outpostgamez.com/news/763/report-activision-ponders-call-of-duty-mmo/

Anthony

are they’re going to put Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 1 into a monthly payment method??

Psy

I saw that “MMO” thing, it’s less of an MMO and more of a “give us your wallet, we’ll give you shit”. I’ve also heard MW2 is better than the first one but honestly, I’ve not played either. I haven’t played any Call of Duty game apart from the first/second. Same for games like Battlefield.

They’re the same shit over and over. You can give me weapons, give me new scenery, give me new characters but ultimately, I’m still either stopping a freaken war or terrorists.

Anthony

Check this out guys:
http://www.modernwarfare247.com/news/no-monthly-fee-for-mw2
They wrote that on 18 June 2009.
Infinity Wards broke their promise, do they?
Why do they do that to us???
We have been loyal to them, and the things we got were all unloyalty.

Anthony

Let’s us save MW 2.
Maybe it’s not to late.
If it’s too late, organize hackers, hack their system, and bring them down.
Of course THESE WILL WORK.
The only thing we need, are hackers.
Few hackers.
Join my facebook group.
I’ll tell you the strategies.

I have MW2, i wish i did’nt, the game is boring, i mean real boring, there’s only like 4-5 maps that i see in rotation all the time, the game is really unbalance in alot of ways.
Sure the weapons look cool, but they all perform almost the same, they have little to no recoil at all, and for the most part there are hackers in most games with no way to vote them off.
COD4 is far superior in every way, i don’t understand how they can make the sequal far worse than the 1st game. It truly is a giant step backwards.

hank

well i didn’t buy this game modern warfare 2 as i finished it in 5 hours on a friends pc. it is a console port and a bad one at that i will never be purchasing another game from infinity ward thats for sure and alot of friends have said the same. they are killing pc gaming so they will not be getting a cent from me again.

Anthony

Yes.
They even charge us monthly for playing those game.
We need FUN.
IF INFINITY WARD AND ACTIVISION WON’T CHARGE US, I’LL STICK TO THE GAME.
BUT IF THEY WILL CHARGE US, LET’S PLAY BATTLEFIELD 3.
For it Battlefield 2, it’s graphics already quite amazing.
It has tank, plane, ship, helicopter and much more.
Their patch are quite amazing.
They even give us new BOOSTER PACK FOR THE GAME.
That means, expansion pack for free through the patch.
And one map, supports until 64 player.
Ah….
Let’s wait Battlefield 3.
It will be released in 2010.

Light

Do you mean BFBC2 is being released in 3/2/10? because bf3 is’nt coming untill 2011.

phil cara

Someone seriously needs to just end this guy. Maybe he’ll get it if we send him some white powder in the mail or do drive by and shoot up his house. Hes such a moron.

Change can be made by hitting these companies wallets. They are pretty big, but damaging a profit margin is definitely one way to get this kind of douche to get the sack. You’re a gamer – read this guy’s full interview and decide which side of the fence you’re on. MW2 is the line in the sand.

Activision have spat in your gamer face – how will you respond? Give them more of your money and ask for more face spit? Or do you avoid paying money for their games, depriving them of the one thing they need to survive – $.

Boycott MW2…play the game some way which doesn’t involve paying for it (play at a friends house?) if you really want to give the product a try but please don’t support this guy’s gamer hate.

Light

Acti/IW will NEVER see my money again, i mean never, i don’t like the way they bullied and slandered the pc community.

I had to do the samething with ubisoft, and the rainbow six:vegas series, they just treated the ps3 community really bad.
They and everyone was talking about how awesome the R6:V series was at the time, and it was.
And everyone bought r6:v2 because they thought it was going to be awesome like the first installment that the 360 had(the ps3 version of 1 was bug filled with washed out colors)and it was a flop, we all called it an expansion pack, and it really was just that, an expansion pack that they charged $60 for.

That’s exactly what IW has done with MW2, it is just an expansion pack that they’ve charged full price for, but for pc they really got ripped off because they charged a full $60 more.

Light

MW2 gets worse and worse every day, i tell no lie here, this game is so darn bad.

dade-

What. A. Cock.

Anthony

Yeah…
MW 2 gets worser….
Its graphics are starting get old….
There is even a better ones and it’s free of subcribtion…
Take ARMA 2 and Battlefield Bad Company 2 for example..

Light

I’ve already have BFBC2 already pre-ordered.

PewPewPewPew

This deserves nothing less that a boycott of all their titles, I grant this cokc has the balls to say it as it is but he has stepped the line and is calling anyone who buys their products a fcuking sheep that is being sucked in.

As far as MW2 is concerned, I just logged of as yet again another tosser has got an aimbot and is ruining the game. Its not enough to not be able to pick a server or to see what game you are joining, you have to endure a shitty lobby and matching system that plops you into laggy aimbot infested games that are 90% finished, if you’re lucky.

Going forward, any game this software house releases goes on my shit list, same as Any product Apple make or market. I aint no frikkin sheep and I aint going to give them my money.
