The Eye-Fi

Turns Any Digital Camera Wi-Fi

The Eye-Fi, the first wireless memory card, is finally set to launch in the UK, and salivating snappers will be able to get their hands on them from the 19th of October.

First announced two years ago, the Eye-Fi will allow any digital camera with an SD slot to be turned into a wireless device.  This means an end to fiddling around with connecting cables.

After installing some software users will be able to send photos directly from their camera to a computer via Wi-Fi whether at home or out and about.  The service offered is increasingly advanced (along with the price) according to your needs.  In the UK there will be several flavours to pick from, all 4GB in size (approx 2,000 photos).

The Eye-Fi Home Video –You can choose up to 32 networks and every time the camera passes within range of one of them your selected photos will be automatically uploaded to a designated file on your computer.  You can also send up to 90 minutes of video in the same way. This basic version will cost £49.99.

The Eye-Fi Share Video – As well as transferring your photos and videos to your computer, with this option you can upload your files directly to the internet, picking from over 25 popular sites such as YouTube, Flickr or Facebook.  This means that files can still be shared even when your home computer is switched off.  The Share option will be £69.99.

The Eye-Fi Pro – Offers additional connectivity through Wi-Fi hotspots as well as Geotagging, automatic back-up and a system of alerts via Twitter, text messages or e-mail to inform you of when your photos are uploading – good if you’re up against a deadline and need to submit content straight away.  This version also uploads RAW files wirelessly to your computer.  This doesn’t come cheap at £119.99, but will save professionals a lot of hassle.
