MW2 Teething Problems?

Issues with the PS3 version

Like many of you, I got home last night to a shiny copy of Modern Warfare 2 for my PS3.  It was a tough decision to go for this over the Xbox 360 version, given the multiplatform games are 99% of the time superior on the 360 and Xbox Live is a much more accomplished and effortless multiplayer experience than the PSN.  However, before the PS3 fanboys get their knickers in a twist, let me explain why I went for the PS3 version…..most of my mates’ 360s have died and not been replaced ,so they are PS3 only friends, and also, when you’re talking on your bluetooth headset you would rather have a whisper quiet PS3 slim than a wind turbine 360 in the background! And, for the kids reading, dont get all console war on me, it’s all very 2006.

However, these deliberations were moot..after an hour of trying last night, my friend and I discovered the party invite system didnt work. Now for many games, that would be an annoying glitch (one I wrongly blamed the PSN for at the time – it turns out its a cross platform problem), but for Modern Warfare 2 – easily the most widely anticipated game of 2009, the sequel to the messianic multiplayer experience that got the meatheads off just playing FIFA and onto something else, the game that had the cheek to raise the RRP to £55 (only for it to be sold for £26 in Sainsbury as a throwaway loss-leader), this was an unmitigated clan-suicide-pact disaster.  There is apparently a workaround on PS3 – you invite a person to play, have them log off the network, log back on, get them to launch the game from the invite, and then you’re in the same party – it worked for me once, but frankly I cant be bothered with the effort, I’ll just play PUGs (pick up games) until the patch is in place.

As for when it gets fixed — well, I imagine there are a few unfortunates at Infinity Ward who are currently getting whipped with a giant paperclip-barbed ethernet cable so it wont be long. Some people, myself included,werent getting trophies until last night – then patch 1.02 went live sometime in the evening and the trophies poured in.  I’m missing a few from clocking the first half of the game though – ah well, I’ll get them on the next playthough.  So Infinity Ward are on the case, and we should expect a party invite patch by Friday, apparently.
